Starter quit

Good morning. I may have messed up my starter by welding on it but I'm not sure. I noticed the lever which engages the solenoid had some wear and I couldn't start the engine from inside of the cab. I could by giving it some help. So, I removed the starter and built up the area that was worn with weld. Now the starter won't function on the truck nor on the bench. What could have happened? Did I fry it, maybe I can rebuild it or do I need to buy another? Please advise if possible. Thanks, John T.
