  • Distributor rebuild

I have a Delco 1112403 distributor for my 261 engine that I'm rebuilding. Deve's book on rebuilding the inline 6 mentions a plastic bushing that should be checked when removing the inner shaft. However, I don't see any such bushing anywhere. There is no sideways play in the shaft, and the gear is tight on the shaft now that I have replaced the pin. But, there is about 1/16" to 1/8" of up and down play in the shaft. Is this normal? Does the plastic bushing have something to do with this?

Inside the grease cup there is a spring and it should not be touching the shaft. It should have a plastic bushing against the shaft that pushes against the spring when assembled correctly. The up and down is normal.

Although I wrote this blog post for a different reason, it shows the setup.
