  • DIY cheap dipstick tube

Deve has a great write up on this and how to make your own from a small piece (~8-/18" I believe) of 3/8 stainless steel tubing. My problem was I replumbed my truck and only bought 3/16, 1/4 and 5/16 tubing. Not wanting to buy a whole roll of 3/8 for this little piece I searched for alternatives. A 20inch piece of 3/8 chrome faucet supply line is a little over $3 at home depot (https://www.homedepot.com/p/3-8-in-O...L-CF/100202750) or lowes (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Homewerks-W...ine/1000011814). The tubing is chrome plated copper so it should not rust. I purchased one, cut it to length, de-burred it and tapped it right in.

FYI- Mine had a very slight bow in it after I installed it. I found that a long Craftsman 1/4 extension fit right down snug the inside of the tube. I put a little oil on it, tapped it in and as it went in it straightened the tube. Then gave it a slight twist and tap and it slid right back out leaving the tube straight and perfect.

I was able to get my dip stick tube out without damage by taking two short pieces of 2 X 4 blocks bolted together and drilled an undersized 3/8” inch hole between the two pieces to form a wooden clamp. After tightening bolts was able to turn and twist the tube easily out of the block.
